교회 창립 46주년을 한 달 앞두고, 교회 역사 중 하나인 성전 건축에 관한 나의 간증을 쓰게 되었음을 하나님께 감사드립니다. 건축의 공식적인 기록은 30주년 기념지인 『하늘의 뜻이 땅에서도』에 기록되어 있습니다. 이 글에서는 1차 건축과 화재 후의 복구 및 개조 과정에서 하나님이 역사하신 은혜를 간증 형식으로 나누고자 합니다.

1979년 7월 22일, 우리 교회는 Newark United Methodist Church의 소예배실에서 첫 예배를 드렸습니다. 1년 후에는 지하실로 옮겨 좀 더 넓은 공간에서 예배를 드리게 되었습니다. 교인들이 제단을 만들고 휘장을 쳐서 그럴듯한 예배 장소가 되었지만, 본 교회의 교인들은 우리를 그리 환영하지 않았습니다. 아이들이 지하실에서 뛰놀았고, 몸에서 나는 마늘 냄새를 싫어해 코를 킁킁거렸습니다. 심지어 새벽기도회를 하는 것을 문제 삼기도 했습니다. 지금 생각해 보면, 우리 주님께서 우리에게 자극을 주셔서 우리만의 예배 장소를 갈망하게 하신 것 같습니다. 당시 델라웨어 대학교의 Community Day 행사에 참가하여 한국 음식을 팔아 건축 헌금을 모았습니다. 또한 이기풍 박사님이 액수를 밝히지 않고 건축 헌금을 해주셨습니다. 저는 창립 1주년 예배에 참석한 William Hemphil 감리사님께 10년 안에 교회 건물을 짓겠다고 장담했지만, 실제로는 20년이 걸렸습니다.

1985년 1월, 우리는 Polydrummond Hill Rd.에 위치한 Ebenezer UMC의 옛 건물로 이사했습니다. 70년 된 흰색 건물로 150명을 수용할 수 있는 1층 예배당과 지하실이 있었고, 교인들이 수리하며 4개의 교실도 만들었습니다. 에어컨이 없어 여름엔 무더운 예배를 드려야 했습니다. 한국에서 온 한 부흥강사는 "가장 발달한 나라에서, 가장 원시적인 예배를 드린다"고 농담하기도 했습니다. 그러나 우리는 행복했습니다. 아이들이 뛰놀고, 김치를 마음껏 먹을 수 있는 우리만의 공간이었기 때문입니다. 우리는 1997년 1월 Silverbrook UMC로 이사할 때까지 12년 동안 그곳에 머물렀습니다.

이 기간 동안 교회 건축 계획은 진전되지 못했습니다. 주된 원인은 일부 목회자와 관련된 문제로 인해 교회 내의 갈등이 지속되었기 때문입니다. 건축준비위원회를 만들고 건축 헌금을 했지만 큰 진전은 없었습니다. 그나마 목사관을 구입한 것만 이루어졌습니다. 1993년 신영각 목사님이 부임하셨습니다. 워싱턴 교회에서 부목사로 섬기셨던 분으로, 소위 1.5세 목회자였습니다. 그곳에서 여러 번의 교회 건축을 지켜보셨다고 했습니다. 처음 2년 동안은 영적인 교회 건축에 전념하셨고, 1995년에는 건축위원회가 구성되어 안세현이 위원장으로, 강규원, 주승근, 왕영두, 이기풍, 신기남, 서삼수 성도님이 위원으로 섬기게 되었습니다. 건축 헌금을 약정하여 50만 달러를 확보하게 되었습니다. 교인들은 학개 선지자의 말씀, "성전이 이렇게 무너져 있는데, 지금이 너희만 잘 꾸민 집에 살고 있을 때란 말이냐?"에 영적인 부담감을 느끼면서, 정성과 기쁨으로 헌금하였습니다. 남은 50만 달러는 융자하기로 하였습니다.

교회 부지를 찾는 일은 쉽지 않았습니다. 델라웨어 주가 작다 보니 교회를 지을 만한 땅이 많지 않았고, 일부 땅은 펜실베이니아나 메릴랜드에 속해 있었습니다. Middletown 지역은 생활권에서 너무 멀었습니다. 그러던 중 부동산 중개인 Mrs. Pucha에게서 전화가 왔습니다. Lancaster Pike 옆에 있는 빈 동물병원이 시장에 나왔다는 것입니다. 가 보니 땅의 크기가 1에이커로 너무 작아 실망하며 돌아서려 했는데, 마침 그 뒤에 야산이 보였습니다. 그 땅에 대해 알아봐 달라고 부탁했고, 며칠 후 전화가 왔습니다. 3.3에이커의 야산인 그 땅은 동물병원의 의사 자녀들이 소유하고 있다고 했습니다. 팔 의향이 있는지를 물었고, 그들은 $160,000에 팔겠다고 하였습니다. 교인총회의 승인을 받고 구입하게 되었으며, Old Capital Trail에 있던 목사관을 팔아 얻은 돈 $160,000으로 현금으로 구입할 수 있었습니다. 할렐루야! 하나님께서 우리 교회를 사랑하셔서 감추어 두었던 땅을 정확히 목사관 판 액수만큼 주셨습니다. 1년간 찾아다닌 끝에, 델라웨어에서 가장 높은 곳에 위치한 하나님의 동산, 델라웨어의 시온산을 얻은 것입니다. “주님의 산이 산들 가운데서 가장 높이 솓아서, 모든 언덕을 아래로 내려다 보며 우뚝 설 것이다.” (미가 4:1)

땅이 결정되자 모든 일이 급속히 진행되었습니다. 장기기획위원회(위원장: 왕영두 장로)의 발표에 따라 10,000평방피트 단층 건물로 건축하기로 하였고, Karines Civil Engineering과 Despande Architect가 선정되었습니다. 이들은 제 환자들의 남편들이기도 했고, 교회 건축이었기에 저렴한 가격으로 일해주었다고 생각합니다. David Hall Construction Co.가 시공사로 선정되어 1997년 10월 23일 첫 삽을 뜨게 되었습니다. 백만 불 규모의 프로젝트였습니다.

교인들은 건축 헌금을 마련하기 위해 온갖 노력을 기울였습니다. 최민옥 교수의 "성가의 밤" 공연이 호케신 교회에서 성황리에 열렸고, 외부 인사들도 건축 헌금에 참여했습니다. 우크라이나 교회의 Hrynysyn 신부와 안병만 전 교육부 장관도 귀한 헌금을 해주셨습니다. 교단에서는 $100,000을 무상으로 지원했고, $500,000은 융자받기로 했습니다.

건축은 순조롭게 진행되었습니다. 1998년 8월 19일 사용 허가를 받고, 같은 달 23일 첫 주일예배를 드렸습니다. 그 감격은 이루 말할 수 없었습니다. 공사 기간 동안 교인들은 현장 큰 나무 밑에서 매일 새벽예배를 드렸습니다. 나는 끝없이 기도했습니다. “내가 산을 향하여 눈을 들리라. 나의 도움이 어디서 올까. 나의 도움은 천지를 지으신 여호와에게서로다.” (시편 121:1–2) “주님의 종인 나와 주님의 백성이 이곳을 바라보며 기도할 때 그 기도를 들어주십시오.” (열왕기상 8:30) 그리고 그 해, 10월 18일에는 입당 감사예배를 드렸습니다

마지막으로, 건축하는 동안 있었던 일들을 여러분과 나누고자 합니다.

1. 큰 저수지를 파면서 나온 흙을 외부로 옮기려면 많은 비용이 들었습니다. 그래서 그 흙을 전 대지에 골고루 펴서 사용하였고, 그 결과 대지의 높이가 원래보다 약 7피트 정도 높아졌습니다.

2. 이웃들이 경계선에 흙벽을 쌓아 달라고 요청해 왔습니다. 우리는 해주겠다고 하면서 “우리 땅이 부족하니, 당신들 땅에 쌓아드리겠다”고 하자, 그다음부터는 더 이상 그런 요구를 하지 않았습니다.

3. 소방전이 러브빌 로드(Loveville Rd.) 쪽에 있어 건물과 너무 멀다는 이유로, 건물 가까이에 따로 설치하라는 요구가 있었습니다. 문제는 매년 유지비로 7천 달러를 내야 한다는 점이었습니다. 그런데 영어 목회부에 출석하던 미국인 교인이 카운티에서 일하는 공무원이어서, 기존의 공공 소방전을 사용할 수 있도록 허가를 받아 문제를 해결할 수 있었습니다.

4. 새 교회 안에 들어갈 가구를 구입해야 했지만, 더는 사용할 예산이 없었습니다. 그래서 메릴랜드 주 노스이스트 UMC에서 10만 달러를 빌려왔습니다. 워싱턴 교회에서는 그들이 사용하던 강대상과 장의자를 보내주었는데, 본당이 원형 구조이고 바닥에 경사가 있어 장의자를 개조해야 했습니다. 우리 교회 한나회에서는 현재의 십자가를 헌물하였고, 주일학교와 청소년들은 주춧돌(cornerstone)을 헌물하면서 그 안에 기도문이 적힌 편지를 넣었습니다.

5. 변호사는 교인이 소개해 준 분이었고, 사례비도 받지 않았습니다. 그러나 문제는 은행에서 송금된 돈을 제때 건설 회사에 전달하지 않는 것이었습니다. 시공사는 계속해서 대금을 요청했고, 나는 어떤 날은 2~3시간씩 그의 사무실에서 기다려야 했습니다. 나중에 들리는 소문에 따르면 그는 횡령 혐의로 감옥에 갔다고 합니다.

이러한 어려움들은 하나님의 은혜로 예상보다 더 순조롭게 해결되었습니다. 잠언의 말씀처럼, “사람이 마음으로 자기 길을 계획할지라도 그 걸음을 인도하시는 이는 여호와시니라.” 저는 고백합니다. “하나님의 집은 하나님 자신이 지으십니다.” 저는 쉬지 않고 기도했습니다.

새로운 성전으로 이사한 후 1년도 지나지 않아 신영각 목사님이 교회를 떠나셨습니다. 그리고 나 또한 교회 내에서의 입지가 좁아졌습니다. 그때 나는 주님께서 나에게 주시는 깨달음을 얻게 되었습니다. “아, 이것은 교인들이 하는 것이 아니라 하나님이 하시는 일이구나. 주님의 일을 마친 후 교만하여 나락으로 떨어지는 것을 방지하시려는 하나님의 은혜구나.”

교회는 수적으로 부흥하여 더 많은 공간이 필요하게 되었습니다. 특히 교실이 부족하였습니다. 교인총회에서는 교회 입구 부지(0.75에이커)를 8만 달러에 구입하기로 결정하였고(2003년), 교육관 신축을 추진하기로 가결하였습니다(2006년). 이에 따라 45만 달러의 건축 헌금이 약정되었습니다. 그러나 대지가 협소하여 건축허가를 받을 수 없었습니다. 2015년에 재도전하였으나 30만 달러의 비용을 지출한 후 결국 포기하게 되었습니다.

2021년 10월 16일, 교회에 작은 화재가 발생하였습니다. 부엌 근처 다락에 위치한 HVAC의 퍼니스에서 불이 나 몇 개의 서까래가 일부 탔습니다. 교육관 전체의 퍼니스를 사용할 수 없었습니다. 소방관들이 뿌린 물로 인해 손상이 심각하였습니다. 어쩔 수 없이 예배 장소를 호케신 연합감리교회(Hockessin UMC)로 옮겨야 했으며, 그곳에서 1년 반을 지냈습니다. (그 교회의 관대함에 진심으로 감사드립니다.) 손상된 부분은 전문 청소업체가 청소하였고, 화재 피해에 대한 금액은 화재 평가 전문업체에서 산정하여 보험사에 보고하였습니다.

2022년 3월 어느 날, 송종남 목사님이 점심 식사를 제안하시며 전화하셨고, 복구위원장직을 맡아 달라고 부탁하셨습니다. “안 장로님께서 복구 위원장을 맡아주셔야 하겠습니다.” 나는 “나이는 많고 은퇴한 장로이며 이 분야에 대해 아는 것이 없다”며 고사했으나, 결국 목사님의 간곡한 요청에 승낙하게 되었습니다.

복구위원회가 구성되었습니다. 위원으로는 실무 장로인 김소영, 김대룡, 차구현, 송영석, 그리고 김영기 재단이사장, 윤무관 권사, 박종칠 집사, 최영옥 권사가 수고해 주셨습니다. 우리는 매주 한 번씩 모여 (대부분 Zoom을 통해) 무엇을 어떻게 진행할지를 논의하였습니다. 보험금 60만 달러와 기존 건축 헌금 60만 달러 등 충분한 자금이 확보되어 있어 복구와 개조를 병행하기로 하였습니다. 복구를 먼저 완료한 후 개조를 진행하자는 의견이 다수였으나, 건축 허가가 지연됨에 따라 먼저 허가가 필요 없는 부분부터 착수하게 되었고, 그로 인해 개조 작업이 먼저 진행된 부분이 많았습니다.

리차드 J. 코코스카(Richard J. Kokoszka) 회사가 제너럴 컨트랙터로 선정되었으나, 경험 부족으로 많은 어려움이 있었습니다. 그러나 그의 성실성을 믿고 끝까지 함께하며 공사를 마무리하게 된 것을 하나님께 감사드립니다. 전기 및 배관은 벤 페리스(Ben Ferris) 회사가 맡아 훌륭히 해주었습니다.

우리 교회 건물은 마치 중환자실에 누워 있는 환자처럼 많은 병을 안고 있었습니다. 부엌의 그리스 트랩(grease trap)은 부식되어 형태를 알아볼 수 없었고, 오수관은 여러 곳이 막혀 있었으며, 평지붕에서는 물이 새고 수많은 전등이 꺼져 있었습니다. 건물 외벽은 여러 군데가 손상되었고, 계단 또한 심하게 파손되어 다시 시공해야 했습니다. 주차장 아스팔트도 재시공이 필요했고, 주차장 조명도 다시 손을 봐야 했습니다. 모두 LED 전등으로 교체하였습니다. 다락에 있었던 두 개의 HVAC는 새 제품으로 구입해 건물 외부 뒷마당으로 재배치하였습니다. 덕트 시스템 전체를 새로 설치하는 데에도 큰 비용이 들었습니다.

8월과 9월 동안 공사 계획을 수립하여 군청에 제출하고 건축 허가를 받았습니다. 이후 공사는 급속히 진행되어, 내벽 및 페인트 작업, 바닥 시공, 화장실과 부엌 완공까지 순조롭게 이루어졌습니다. 많은 문이 손상되어 새로 교체해야 했습니다.

오래된 장의자를 교체하자는 의견이 나왔고, 비용이 컸지만 지금 아니면 어려울 것 같아 교체하기로 결정하였습니다. 또한 지붕 위에 있었던 두 개의 HVAC도 노후화로 인해 새로 구입하기로 하였고, 교회 내 모든 가구도 전면 교체하였습니다. 총공사비는 120만 달러에 달했습니다. 2023년 3월 사용 허가를 받고 다시 교회로 돌아왔으며, 정확히 1년 만에 모든 공사가 마무리되었습니다.

공사 기간 동안 우리 교인들은 기도로, 봉사로 함께하였고, 매일 교회를 찾아 살피는 관심과 수고는 충분히 상을 받을 만했습니다. 특히 복구위원들의 헌신과 수고는 하나님께서 아실 것입니다. 이 큰 일을 마친 후, 이 늙은 종은 이렇게 고백합니다.

“너희도 명령을 받은 대로 다 하고 나서 '우리는 쓸모없는 종입니다. 우리는 마땅히 해야 할 일을 하였을 뿐입니다.' 하여라.” (누가복음 17:10)

“나는 내 몸을 쳐서 굴복시킵니다. 그것은 내가, 남에게 복음을 전하고 나서 도리어 나 스스로는 버림을 받는, 가련한 신세가 되지 않으려는 것입니다.” (고린도전서 9:27)

Testimony: The Construction of Our Church Building

I give thanks to God for the opportunity to share my testimony about the construction of our church building, one of the key chapters in our church's history, just a month before the 46th anniversary of our founding. An official record of the construction was included in the 30th-anniversary booklet titled "On Earth as It Is in Heaven." In this testimony, I will share the grace of God during the first phase of construction and the recovery and renovation after the fire.

On July 22, 1979, our church held its first worship service in the chapel of Newark United Methodist Church. A year later, we moved to the basement for a larger space. Though we tried to make the space more worshipful by building an altar and hanging a veil, the members of the host church were not welcoming. They complained about our children running around and were offended by the smell of garlic from our bodies. They even objected to our early morning prayer services. Looking back, it seems the Lord stirred in us a longing for our own place of worship. We raised building funds by selling Korean food at the University of Delaware's Community Day. Dr. Ki Poong Lee also donated generously, though he did not disclose the amount. At the first anniversary service, I confidently told District Superintendent William Hemphil that we would build our own church within 10 years, but it actually took 20.

In January 1985, we moved into the former building of Ebenezer UMC on Polydrummond Hill Rd. It was a 70-year-old white building with a sanctuary that seated 150 and a basement. Our members renovated it and created four classrooms. Without air conditioning, summers were sweltering. One revival preacher from Korea joked, "In the most advanced country, you are worshiping in the most primitive way." But we were happy. It was our space, where children could run and we could eat kimchi freely. We stayed there for 12 years, until we moved to Silverbrook UMC in January 1997.

During that period, construction plans stalled due to internal church conflicts, largely involving issues with some pastors. Though we formed a Building Committee and raised funds, progress was limited. We did, however, manage to purchase a parsonage. In 1993, Rev. Younggak Shin, who had served as an associate pastor at a church in Washington and was a 1.5-generation pastor, was appointed. Having witnessed several building projects, he focused on spiritual church building during his first two years. In 1995, a construction committee was formed with S.H. Ahn as chair and members Kyu Won Kang, Seung Geun Joo, Young Doo Wang, Ki Poong Lee, Ki Nam Shin, and Sam Soo Seo. The congregation pledged around $500,000. Many felt convicted by the words of the prophet Haggai, "Is it time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?" They gave joyfully and sacrificially. The remaining $500,000 would be secured through a loan.

Finding land was not easy. Delaware is small and had few suitable plots. Some were located in Pennsylvania or Maryland, and Middletown was too far. One day, a realtor named Mrs. Pucha called about a former veterinary hospital for sale on Lancaster Pike. It was only one acre, too small, and we were about to leave disappointed when we noticed a wooded hill behind it. We asked her to inquire about that land. A few days later, she informed us that it was a 3.3-acre wooded property owned by the children of the veterinarian. They agreed to sell it for $160,000. The congregation approved the purchase, and we were able to buy it in cash using the $160,000 from selling the parsonage on Old Capital Trail. Hallelujah! God gave us the hidden land for the exact amount we had from the sale. After a year of searching, we acquired a hilltop site—Mount Zion of Delaware. "In the last days the mountain of the Lord's temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills." (Micah 4:1)

Once the land was secured, everything progressed rapidly. Based on the plan from the Long-Term Planning Committee (Chair: Elder Young Doo Wang), we decided to build a single-story, 10,000 square foot building. Karines Civil Engineering and Despande Architect were chosen—husbands of some of my patients who offered reasonable rates for this church project. David Hall Construction Co. was selected as the contractor, and groundbreaking was held on October 23, 1997. The project cost was $1 million.

Our congregation made every effort to raise funds. Professor Min Ok Choi's "Night of Sacred Music" performance at Hockessin Church was a great success. Even outsiders contributed. Fr. Hrynysyn of the Ukrainian Church and former Minister of Education Byung Man Ahn gave generous donations. The denomination provided a $100,000 grant, and we secured a $500,000 loan.

Construction went smoothly. We received the occupancy permit on August 19, 1998, and held our first Sunday service on August 23. Words cannot express the joy we felt. During the construction, members gathered every morning under a large tree at the site for dawn prayer. I prayed unceasingly, "I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." (Psalm 121:1–2) "Hear the supplication of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive." (1 Kings 8:30) On October 18, we held the Dedication Thanksgiving Service.

Several notable things happened during construction:

• Digging a large reservoir produced excess soil. Hauling it away was costly, so we spread it over the entire site, raising the elevation by about 7 feet.

• Neighbors requested a soil wall along the property line. We agreed but asked to build it on their land since ours was insufficient. They dropped the request.

• The fire hydrant on Loveville Rd. was too far from the building. Installing a new one nearby would have cost $7,000 annually. Thankfully, an English-speaking church member who worked for the county helped us get approval to use the existing public hydrant.

• We had no budget left to furnish the new church. Northeast UMC in Maryland loaned us $100,000. Washington Church donated their used pulpit and pews, though we had to modify them due to our sanctuary’s circular and sloped design. The Hannah Women’s Group donated the current cross, and the children and youth donated the cornerstone, placing letters with prayers inside.

• Our attorney was introduced by a church member and worked pro bono. However, he delayed transferring bank funds to the contractor. I sometimes waited two to three hours in his office. Later, we heard he was jailed for embezzlement.

These difficulties were, by God’s grace, resolved more smoothly than expected. As Proverbs says, "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps." I confess: "The house of God is built by God Himself." I prayed without ceasing.

Less than a year after moving into the new church, Rev. Shin left the congregation, and I also found myself sidelined. Then, I realized God was teaching me a lesson: "This is not man’s work but God’s. God humbled me so that I would not fall into pride after completing His work."

The church grew and needed more space, especially classrooms. In 2003, the congregation voted to purchase 0.75 acres at the church entrance for $80,000. In 2006, we approved plans to build an education center, pledging $450,000. However, the lot was too small to obtain a construction permit. We tried again in 2015 but had to abandon the plan after spending $300,000.

On October 16, 2021, a small fire broke out in the attic near the kitchen, caused by the furnace of the HVAC system. Several rafters were damaged, and the entire education wing’s furnace became unusable. Water sprayed by firefighters caused serious damage. We had to relocate to Hockessin UMC for 18 months. We are truly grateful for their hospitality. A professional cleaning company handled the damage, and an insurance adjuster assessed the value of the loss.

In March 2022, Rev. Jongnam Song called me for lunch and asked me to serve as the Chair of the Recovery Committee. I initially declined due to age and lack of expertise, but accepted after his earnest request.

The Recovery Committee was formed with elders Soyoung Kim, Daeryong Kim, Guhyun Cha, Youngsuk Song, Foundation Board Chair Youngki Kim, deacon Moo Kwan Yoon, deacon Jongchul Park, and deaconess Youngok Choi. We met weekly, mostly on Zoom, to plan our course. With $600,000 from insurance and $600,000 from existing building funds, we decided to proceed with both recovery and renovation. Due to permit delays, we began with renovation tasks that did not require permits.

Richard J. Kokoszka was selected as the general contractor, and though inexperienced, he was sincere and completed the project. Ben Ferris Company did excellent electrical and plumbing work.

Our church building was like a patient in intensive care. The grease trap in the kitchen was corroded beyond recognition, sewer pipes were clogged, the flat roof leaked, and many lights were out. Exterior walls were damaged, stairs had to be rebuilt, and the parking lot was repaved. All lights were replaced with LEDs. The two HVAC units in the attic were replaced and moved to the backyard. The entire duct system was redone at great cost.

In August and September, we submitted plans and received building permits. Construction progressed quickly, completing interior painting, flooring, bathrooms, and kitchen. Many damaged doors were replaced. We decided to replace old pews despite high costs, believing this was the best opportunity. We also replaced the two aging rooftop HVAC units and all church furniture. Total construction cost was $1.2 million. We received the occupancy permit in March 2024 and returned to the church, completing all work exactly one year later.

During construction, members prayed, served, and watched over the church daily. Their dedication deserves great reward. Especially the sacrifice and service of the Recovery Committee will be remembered by God. After this great task, this old servant confesses:

"So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'" (Luke 17:10)

"I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize." (1 Corinthians 9:27)
